The nailhead trim is what takes the time. Each nail has to be individually placed at consistent spacing along a shaped, curved back perimeter — around corners, along curves, holding the rhythm. Then the diamond quilting gives the velvet its directional shimmer. The carved legs are a tribute to the Indian woodworking tradition that underlies so much of what we make. All three techniques in one chair. That is the ambition.
The Making of the Cerchio Dining Chair

The back is upholstered in short-pile velvet over a medium-density foam pad, with diagonal stitching lines forming the diamond grid across the full face. Individual brass or dark-tone nailheads are then placed by hand along the full shaped perimeter — spacing marked before hammering to ensure visual consistency around curves. The legs are turned and carved from solid hardwood in our workshop.
Directional Velvet for Diamond Quilting
Diamond quilting creates raised peaks and stitched recesses across a velvet surface — the pile catches light differently at each angle, adding tonal depth to the silver-grey that no other fabric achieves. ::
Hand-Placed Nailhead Perimeter
Individual nailheads are positioned one at a time along the full shaped back perimeter, spacing marked by hand around every curve and corner to maintain visual consistency — a painstaking finishing task done entirely by hand. ::
Hand-Carved Hardwood Legs
The ornate turned and carved front legs are crafted on a lathe and finished by hand — a traditional Indian woodworking skill that gives this chair its neo-classical authority and root it in craft heritage. ::
