A dining chair that treats every meal as an occasion — channel-stitched back, walnut curved apron, and brass-capped feet that belong at a table worth sitting at.
Channel stitching on a curved high back is a commitment — it requires a skilled upholsterer, a consistent spacing jig, and the patience to let the channels follow the curve of the form rather than fighting against it. The curved front apron was added to address a problem I always had with dining chairs: the base reads as spindly. The apron solves that. It gives the chair visual weight at the base without using heavy proportions. The brass sabots are the final touch — not decorative in a showy way, but a quiet indicator that someone cared about every last centimetre of this piece.
The Making of the Ocra Dining Chair
Designed by Harsha
Our Bangalore atelier treats channel stitching on a curved back as one of its signature upholstery exercises. The channels must track consistently from the top of the back to the seat — maintaining equal spacing as the form curves — without puckering or pulling. The walnut curved apron is shaped and finished separately before the chair is assembled, ensuring the wood grain reads cleanly in the context of the full piece.
Channel Stitching
Eight to ten parallel vertical channels run the full height of the high back — a tailored, structured detail that makes the chair look as if it was made for a specific room rather than produced for a catalogue.
Curved Walnut Apron
A wide curved panel of walnut spans the front two legs below the seat — an unusual design element that grounds the base visually and adds architectural presence.
Brass Sabots
Polished brass foot caps press onto all four tapered leg tips — a small, warm metallic detail at floor level that completes the piece's material story.
