A dining chair with a body — the back cut to a torso silhouette, fully channel-tufted, over dark espresso legs with brass ferrule caps.

I wanted a dining chair with a back that you could identify from a silhouette alone. The human torso was the obvious answer — it's the form the chair is already responding to. Once the shape was decided, the channels were inevitable: they reinforce the figurative quality by suggesting musculature. The waist is the hardest part to upholster. It is also the part that makes everything else legible.

The Making of the Forma Dining Chair

The back frame is CNC-routed to the precise body-silhouette shape — shoulders, waist, and hip flare — with structural reinforcement at the narrow waist zone. Our artisans then upholster the shaped back in cream fabric, cutting and stretching each panel around the waist curve without excess or tension lines. Channel tufting is adapted across the changing width, converging at the waist and spreading at the shoulders to remain visually parallel.

Shaped-Panel Fabric Upholstery

Upholstering a precisely shaped, non-rectangular back in uniform pale fabric requires careful panel cutting and hand-stretching around the waist curve — any excess or tension variation is immediately visible on a plain, light surface. ::

Adaptive Channel Tufting

Running vertical channels up a body-shaped back requires the stitching lines to converge at the narrow waist and spread at the wide shoulders — staying visually parallel to the eye across a surface that changes width. ::

The back frame is CNC-routed to the silhouette shape with a structurally reinforced waist zone — narrow enough to read as figurative, strong enough to withstand regular dining chair use without flex. ::

How long does it take to make the Forma Dining Chair?
6–8 weeks from order confirmation. We build one piece at a time — frame first, then upholstery, then a final hand-finish — so the timeline reflects real bench-time, not warehouse stock.

How does delivery work, and where do you ship?
We deliver across India with white-glove placement included. International shipping is available on request — our team will coordinate freight, customs, and last-mile placement at the destination.
What does payment look like for a custom piece?
A 50% deposit confirms the order and reserves your build slot in the atelier. The balance is due before dispatch. We'll share a transparent quote with material and labour breakdown after the consultation.
