Boucle has a quality that photographs can't fully capture — the way the looped yarn shifts colour as you move around it, the slight give when you press your palm to the surface. On the barrel form, the stretch at the curved back requires hand-fitting at every seam. I wanted the contrast of that warm, organic texture against the precision of the matte-black swivel base — soft and mechanical in perfect tension.

Wrapping a curved barrel shell in boucle is not a machine task — the looped yarn must be hand-stretched at the curved back without distorting the pile. In our Bangalore atelier, this chair begins on a moulded shell jig, our upholsterers working the boucle panel by panel until every surface is crease-free and every edge holds its soft halo.
