Carved acanthus. Gilded relief. Kashmir paisley. The Victorian Patterned Chair holds two great ornamental traditions in one Bangalore-made armchair — for rooms that collect meaning.
This is the most labour-intensive piece in our atelier. The carved frame — crest rail, arm corbels, cabriole legs, and apron — each requires individual hand-carving work before the ivory paint is applied. Then the gilding: gold applied by hand to every raised relief surface, each acanthus curl and floral motif picked out individually. The paisley fabric must be pattern-matched across the back, seat, and arm panels — the large-scale motif cannot simply be cut and placed without considering how the pattern lands on each surface. This is a chair that accounts for many days of work before it leaves us.
The Making of the Orvani Chair
Designed by Harsha
At our Bangalore atelier, the Victorian Patterned Chair begins months before the first stitch — with the carvers. Acanthus leaves at each knee, a floral motif at the crest rail, corbel arm supports, and a cartouche apron are all hand-carved in solid hardwood before ivory paint and gold gilding are applied. Our upholsterers then pattern-match the large-scale blue paisley across back, seat, and arm panels for deliberate motif placement.
The Paisley Fabric
Blue and grey paisley — large-scale botanical forms in tonal navy, slate, and cream, pattern-matched across all upholstered panels so the motif flows deliberately from back to seat to arms. ::
The Gold Gilding
Gold applied by hand to every raised surface of the carved frame — each acanthus curl, each floral crest, each knee cartouche picked out individually in warm gold against ivory white. ::
The Carved Architecture
Cabriole legs with acanthus knee carvings, floral crest rail, corbel arm supports, and shell-carved apron — dozens of hours of hand-carving work that forms the armchair's structural and ornamental skeleton.
